QR Codes in Marketing: What Works
QR codes came back — used well they bridge print and digital. Used badly they waste space. Here are the practices that drive scans and conversions.
Why QR codes returned
After a slow start, QR codes became mainstream because phone cameras scan them natively — no app needed. They are a clean bridge from physical media to a digital destination.
Generate them free with the QR code generator.
Where they work
- Packaging — instructions, recipes, reorder links.
- Receipts — surveys, loyalty sign-up.
- Table tents & menus — digital menus, ordering.
- Posters & print ads — landing pages, offers.
- Events — badges, check-in, session feedback.
- Product labels — authenticity, warranty registration.
Design rules that drive scans
- Give a reason and a cue. "Scan to get 10% off" beats a bare code.
- Place it where a phone is already out and the intent is clear.
- Size for distance (≈10× the scan distance) and keep high contrast.
- Keep the surrounding quiet zone clear.
- Shorten the URL so the pattern stays simple.
- Test in context — real phones, real lighting, real surface.
Static vs dynamic
- Static — encodes the destination directly. Free forever, never changes, no tracking.
- Dynamic — encodes a short link you can edit and track. Powerful, but the code depends on your link staying alive.
Tracking that is honest
Give each placement its own destination URL with UTM parameters (for example ?utm_source=poster&utm_medium=qr). Now your analytics tell you which code performed — without invasive tracking.
Mistakes to avoid
- Points to a slow, non-mobile page.
- Too small, too low-contrast, or on a curved/shiny surface.
- No context — users do not know why to scan.
- Behind glass where reflection kills the scan.
- Dead dynamic link after a campaign ends.
- Landing page that needs an app download to do anything.
The test
Looking at the code in its final placement, ask: would a normal person bother to scan this? If the answer is not obviously yes, fix the context before the design.
